Artist's Statement

"My ceramic sculptures are slip cast from pebbles found whilst diving and exploring the ocean and its shores. These are selected according to their physical properties and the emotional response they may bring. When casting using porcelain slip I consider the density and balance of form. Hand built elements such as chairs represent the trace of human beings on an emotional journey and states of mind. The physical qualities of the porcelain represents the fragility of human beings whilst the pure white element gives a blank canvas for individuals to form opinions and responses in their own world.

I take my sculptures underwater and to the shores where the pebble was originally found to photograph them. It is here, under the surface, away from outside realities that I consider psychological scenarios. Sometimes a physical separation, a removal from any given situation is necessary to see clearer, to feel more or less. This is when I use the sea's impartiality and allow a certain sense of freedom to explore. My underwater photographs also provide inspiration for future creations.”
